Side Note:
Unfortunately, the open alley accessible from Foster Street sidewalk is still blocked off by the ongoing construction next door to my studio/building where Spee Dee Que and Choice Cut Hair once was. Originally the decades old print shop and decades old black owned barber shop were set to move back in with additional businesses. Somewhere along the way, plans changed, and it will become a second steak house restaurant (first based in Raleigh). That is as much as I know about that. The decades old moon mural was saved and moved to the upstairs of Durham Arts Place Gallery. Still, nobody knows who painted it. If anyone knows the history of the Moon Mural, please inform myself and Dan Ellison. If anyone would like to save this historical landmark, inform Dan. A local biker informed me that he has seen this mural since the 70s. The block I am on is one of the first blocks built for downtown Durham. After the transformation of both sides, Durham Arts Place - originally The Palms Cafe - remains the only historical landmark of the block...
When the Steakhouse opens, the open alley should be accessible from Foster to Holland Street!

(My painting celebrating "Eno River Association")
Hey, this is Julian Phelps! My paintings explore the mysteries of nature!
I use an extensive amount of mediums which broadly include oil, enamel, acrylic, and mixed media. To dive deeper, many of my paintings on stretched panels use oil / oil and cold-wax / oil, cold wax, powder pigment. On canvas pad / weighted papers / objects in the black light room - oil based enamel. Acrylics are used for exhibit signage and temporary murals in the front of studio and fluorescent based in the back of studio in the black light room.
When instructing art sessions, I typically use watercolors, acrylics, and collaging.
There was a time I was "making" my own cold-wax from bleached beeswax and odorless solvents. It was a fun learning experience at the time, but it was also time consuming.
Sizes of paintings are from miniature (2"x1") to a larger scale (24"x48" stretched panel / 8' x 8' hardi-plank / walls, floors, ceiling temporary murals). I have built and stretched many paintings which allows me to control the sizing and surface used. Many of the panels built are vertically hung, long in length and five inches in width which allows itself to be hung in space conserving areas.
Within nature, I capture energy and movement through whimsical lines and an array of colors. Themes include: floral, fauna, water, tribal/symbols, and non-objective.
I have a ginormous portfolio, some can be viewed on this site, on my previous wix site (link at top of page) and my social media pages (Instagram and Facebook - links top of page), and in person at my studio.

My studio, Phelps Phine Art, is located in the beating heart of downtown Durham,
in the back entry of Durham Arts Place (est '96)
305 East Chapel Hill Street, Durham, North Carolina, United States
I moved into the raw space in 2015, work and display.
Studio open hours are on Durham 3rd Fridays 6-9pm, downtown events, and by appointment.
During studio openings, outdoor signage and sometimes art can be seen in alley in front of the studio. Current construction prevents entrance from Foster street but accessible from the parking lot and alley from Holland Street. The studio space is located behind the double metal doors, past Artistically Speaking Art Studio. In other words, my studio is in a hole-in a hole behind one of Durham's last historical brick walls.
The front space of the studio display selected paintings and in the back of the studio, behind the curtains, is my ongoing and continuously transforming Black Light Installation, "Walk in Depth."
"Walk in Depth" is an immersive installation that explores mental and physical space through fluorescent painting and black lighting. Pictures are encouraged. Wear white/light colored clothing & you will glow!
It is ongoing and continuously transforming since November 2017.
